Prospective cohort study to investigate factors associated with continued immobilization of a nondisplaced scaphoid waist fracture
The Journal of Hand Surgery May 30, 2021
Bulstra AEJ, Hendrickx LAm, Sierevelt IN, et al. - This study was attempted to investigate nondisplaced scaphoid waist fractures to ascertain the factors correlated with the surgeon’s decision to continue cast or splint immobilization at the first visit when cast removal was being considered; greater pain on examination; and the surgeon’s concern about radiographic consolidation. Forty-five patients with a nondisplaced scaphoid waist fracture treated nonoperatively were prospectively enrolled. Multivariable regression analysis was used to evaluate the factors associated with each outcome. This study’s findings demonstrate that inadequate radiographic healing and greater symptoms of depression are correlated with a surgeon’s decision to continue cast or splint immobilization of a nondisplaced scaphoid waist fracture.
