Prolonged duration of incontinence for men prior to initial anti-incontinence surgery: An opportunity for improvement
Urology Jun 06, 2018
Fuchs JS, et al. - Authors assessed the duration and severity of male incontinence symptoms prior to presentation for initial anti-incontinence surgery (AIS) in a large tertiary subspecialty practice. They retrospectively reviewed the male SUI patients (2007-2017) and evaluated time from SUI onset to initial AIS across various demographics comparing male sling and artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). Nonetheless, prior to initial AIS, the median duration of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) was 2.7 years, a delay of more than 5 years was seen in one-third of men. On average, AUS presented for AIS 6 months less relative to sling patients. A longer duration of SUI was seen in older men prior to seeking surgical care.
