Prodrome and non-prodrome phenotypes of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis
Urology May 20, 2018
Warren JW, et al. - Experts tested the presumption that risk factors for Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS)/Interstitial Cystitis (IC) in women differed between those with and without the BPS/IC prodrome. Urinary symptoms were developed in prodrome cases in their early twenties (ie, the prodrome) and were at very high risk of numerous non-bladder syndromes (NBSs). In non-prodrome cases, urinary symptoms developed in the early forties (ie, full-blown BPS/IC) and to have the maximal number of NBSs these patients were no more likely than controls. Authors noted the consistency of these findings with recent suggestions of 2 BPS/IC phenotypes, 1 with systemic and psychosocial manifestations and the other more specific to the bladder. Moreover, there was a possibility of several risk factors identified to be hints of related or causal nervous system pathophysiologies.
