Prevalence, patterns and predictors of depression treatment among community-dwelling older adults with stroke in the United States: A cross sectional study

BMC Psychiatry May 22, 2018

Bhattacharjee S, et al. - Researchers examined national-level pervasiveness, patterns and predictors of depression treatment among older adults (age ≥ 50 years) who were stroke survivors, who did not die during the calendar year, and had co-occurring depression in this retrospective, cross-sectional study. Some form of depression treatment was received by nearly 90% of the study sample. Several individual-level factors (such as age and education) were found to be linked with use of depression treatment. The risks and benefits of antidepressants (such as SSRIs or TCAs) should be carefully assessed in this vulnerable population prior to their use.
