Prevalence of parent reported health conditions among 0- to 17-year-olds in rural United States: National Survey of Children's Health, 2016-2017

The Journal of Rural Health Feb 14, 2020

Kenney MK, et al. - In this study with children in the US, researchers assessed the prevalence of physical, mental, and developmental health conditions in the pediatric population, as well as, they determined the link with urban vs rural residence. Using the 2016-2017 National Survey of Children's Health, they obtained cross-sectional data for children aged 0-17 years (N = 71,811) and utilizing these data, they performed bivariate/multivariable analyses. Findings revealed that crude rates of parent-stated excellent/very good health were lower and crude rates of parent-reported or doctor-diagnosed physical and mental health conditions were higher among rural children vs urban children but the adjusted analyses did not reveal the same pattern of urban-rural differentials. Experts noted compositional as well as contextual variations in the urban/rural populations, this implies that rate differences in child health conditions may be attributable to social determinants of health.
