Prevalence of detection of Clostridioides difficile among asymptomatic children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Tougas SR, Lodha N, Vandermeer B, et al. - Among asymptomatic children across the age spectrum, the greatest C difficile colonization rates (41%) were recorded among children at 6 to 12 months of age; the rates decreased thereafter.

  • This systematic review and meta-analysis included 95 studies with 19,186 participants.

  • Infants aged 6 to 12 months showed the greatest prevalence of detection of toxigenic and nontoxigenic C difficile (41%) and children aged 5 to 18 years had the lowest prevalence (12%).

  • Infants aged 6 to 12 months had the greatest prevalence of toxigenic C difficile detection (14%).

  • Consideration of the high likelihood of C difficile colonization in young children should be included in test result interpretation.
