Prevalence of defective restorations and factors associated with re-intervention in primary teeth: A retrospective university-based study
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Oct 11, 2019
de Ávila NM, Bottezini PA, Nicoloso GF, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to examine the prevalence of defective restorations in public dental service and factors correlated with re-intervention in primary teeth. The study consisted of all medical reports (census) of children presenting restorations in primary teeth, who had received dental treatment in a public setting during the 1-year period. Only restorations presenting defects related to esthetic, functional, or biological reasons at first clinical examination were incorporated for investigation. Data reported that 37.7% presented some type of defect from a total of 302 restorations placed in 114 children. For caries-active patients, restorations with recurrent caries were more commonly present and often replaced. The involvement of recurrent caries affects the decision of re-intervention, which in most cases leads to a replacement of restoration.
