Prevalence of comorbidities and effect on survival in survivors of human papillomavirus–related and human papillomavirus–unrelated head and neck cancer in the United States
Cancer Nov 22, 2018
Eytan DF, et al. - In this retrospective cross-sectional study, researchers determined the prevalence as well as survival impact of comorbidities that occurred during the survivorship period in human papillomavirus (HPV)–related head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors and HPV-unrelated HNC survivors. This was investigated in view of increasing incidence of HPV–related HNC resulting in increasing prevalence of survivors. Participants were individuals with a first incident primary diagnosis of HNC from 2004 through 2011 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)–Medicare-linked databases. They found comorbidities posed a large burden for both patients with HPV-related and HPV-unrelated HNC, both of which were related to decreased survival. Based on these findings, screening for the highly prevalent conditions associated with the risk of death was suggested to to be included in oncologic surveillance.
