Prevalence and risk factors of drug-resistant extrapulmonary tuberculosis
The Clinical Respiratory Journal May 18, 2018
Boonsarngsuk V, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers investigated the prevalence and risk factors of drug-resistant (DR)-extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in patients grouped as those having: pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), EPTB and concomitant PTB and EPTB (PTB + EPTB). The reported prevalences of isoniazid-, rifampicin- and multidrug-resistant EPTB were 7.8%, .5% and .5%, respectively, which were lower relative to those of PTB. In patients with concomitant PTB, a high prevalence of DR-EPTB was detected. In isolated EPTB, although low prevalences of rifampicin- and multidrug-resistant TB were reported, the observed prevalence of isoniazid-resistant TB continued to be high. For EPTB patients, especially for those who carry the aforementioned risk factors, drug susceptibility testing was recommended.
