Prevalence and prognostic significance of right ventricular dysfunction in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 13, 2018
Shah JP, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers assessed right ventricular (RV) systolic function by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and determined the prevalence and prognostic significance of right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVSD) in 226 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) patients. They defined RVSD by RV ejection fraction (RVEF) ≤ 45%; a total of 26 (11.5%) patients were found to have RVSD. They analyzed the link between RVSD, clinical characteristics and outcomes. Patients with RVSD vs without RVSD were found to have significantly lower RVEF. According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, patients with RVSD had a significantly higher risk for cardiovascular mortality, but there was no significant difference in all-cause mortality and heart failure related rehospitalization. Overall, findings suggested that RVSD is a common phenotype and independently predicts cardiovascular mortality in patients with HC.
