Prevalence and impact of hazardous alcohol use in intensive care cohort: A multicenter, register-based study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jul 31, 2021
Nissilä E, Hynninen M, Reinikainen M, et al. - Researchers focused on the prevalence of hazardous alcohol use as well as on its link with intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) and mortality in ICU patients. They obtained data from the Finnish Intensive Care Consortium's Database from a 3-month period. Hazardous alcohol use was characterized by a score of 5 or more for women and 6 or more for men from a maximum score of 12 points. In Finnish ICUs, prevalence of hazardous alcohol use was estimated to be 21%. Younger age and being male was more often seen in patients with hazardous alcohol use vs non-hazardous alcohol users. In terms of LOS or hospital mortality, there was no difference between hazardous and non-hazardous alcohol users.
