BMC Public Health Jun 25, 2019

Mamani-Ortiz Y, et al. - In this cross-sectional community-based study, researchers focused on preventable risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as well as the demographic and socioeconomic factors related to them in Cochabamba, Bolivia. They analyzed 10,704 children and adults who were permanent residents in Cochabamba. A high prevalence of CVD risk factors was reported in Cochabamba. Behavioral risk factors such as current smoking, current alcohol consumption, low intake of fruits and vegetables, and low level of physical activity each had a prevalence of 11.6%, 42.76%, 76.73%, and 64.77%, respectively. Overweight, obesity, waist risk or abdominal obesity, and raised blood pressure showed a prevalence of 35.84%, 20.49%, 54.13%, and 17.5%, respectively. The prevalence of most of the risk factors assessed was lower in general among indigenous populations and those residing in the Andean region. In this study, a standardized methodology was used to define the first CVD risk factor profile of people dwelling in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
