Prevalence and correlates of cervical abnormalities among female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico
International Journal of STD & AIDS Jun 09, 2019
Bristow CC, et al. - Researchers investigated the prevalence of cervical abnormalities and their correlates among a sample of female sex workers (FSWs) in Tijuana, Mexico. Participants comprised a cohort of 300 FSWs recruited using modified time–location sampling and were provided Pap, HIV, and STI tests. An abnormal Pap had a prevalence of 11.7% (35/300). FSWs ever registered with municipal health services less frequently had an abnormal Pap result (4.8% vs 14.4%), more frequently had a previous Pap test (88.1% vs 70.4%), and more frequently reported a sexual health checkup in the last year (60.7% vs 37.0%) when compared to those who had never been registered. The risk for cervical abnormalities remains there for FSWs, including those who registered with the municipality.
