Prescription opioid misuse associated with risk behaviors among adolescents
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Aug 24, 2019
Clayton HB, Bohm MK, Lowry R, et al. - Using data from the 2017 nationally representative Youth Risk Behavior Survey (14,765 high school students in Grades 9–12), researchers investigated if there exists a link between lifetime nonmedical use of prescription opioids and health risk behaviors among adolescents. Adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% CIs were estimated using logistic regression models (adjusted for sex, race/ethnicity, grade, and sexual identity). Findings revealed the association of nonmedical use of prescription opioids with several health risk behaviors. By screening pediatric patients for opioid use disorder and improving prescribing practices, nonmedical use of prescription opioids can be attenuated, and integrated evidence-based health education programs in schools can also serve this purpose, from a primary prevention perspective.
