Preoperative peak expiratory flow (PEF) for predicting postoperative pulmonary complications after lung cancer lobectomy: A prospective study with 725 cases

Journal of Thoracic Disease Aug 03, 2018

Lai Y, et al. - In this prospective analysis of 725 patients who had lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), researchers investigated the association between peak expiratory flow (PEF) and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). They analyzed patients’ basic characteristics and clinical data in the hospital. Findings demonstrated a significant correlation between a low PEF value and PPCs in this population. This implied that a low PEF could potentially be an independent risk factor for the PPC occurrence. A PPC-guided (PEF value ≤300 L/min) risk assessment could be valuable for perioperative management of lung cancer candidates waiting for surgery.
