Prehospital aortic blood flow control techniques for non-compressible traumatic hemorrhage

Injury Mar 03, 2021

Shi C, Li S, Wang Z, et al. - Researchers sought to review three techniques, including external aortic compression (EAC), abdominal aortic junctional tourniquet (AAJT), and resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA), for prehospital control of non-compressible hemorrhage. Clinical effectiveness for the control of severe hemorrhage was demonstrated by all three techniques. Per findings, use of EAC can be easily made at no cost, but its use during transport is challenging and may lead to complications. Compared with EAC, use of AAJT and REBOA can be done for a wider range of torso injuries. Comparable efficacy was reported for AAJT and REBOA, but they should be employed for a limited time (< 1hr). REBOA is invasive and necessitates intensive and continuous training when compared with EAC and AAJT.
