Predictors of spontaneous ureteral stone passage in the presence of an indwelling ureteral stent
Urolithiasis Oct 25, 2018
Kuebker JM, et al. - Researchers determined the frequency and predictors of ureteral stone passage with a stent in place. For this purpose, they reviewed records and identified patients who had a stent placed for a single ureteral stone. Stone passage was ascertained by using subsequent ureteroscopy or CT scan. They documented the occurrence of ureteral stone passage with a concurrent ureteral stent in 14% of stones less than 7 mm in maximum diameter and it was not a rare event. Independent predictors of passage were stone size and duration of stent before ureteroscopy or CT. A trial of urine straining or repeat imaging before subsequent ureteroscopy was recommended to be considered in select patients with small ureteral stones who have been stented.
