Predictors of new-onset atrial tachyarrhythmias after transcatheter atrial septal defect closure in adults

Heart, Lung, and Circulation Apr 17, 2021

Miura K, Kimura M, Anzai A, et al. - Researchers focused on determining unknown risk factors for new-onset atrial tachyarrhythmia (ATA) occurrence post-transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure in patients without a history of ATA. They reviewed 238 patients aged ≥18 years who had transcatheter ASD closure and had no history of ATA. Older age and presence of high brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels were seen in patients with new-onset ATA vs those without new-onset ATA. Findings indicate that a higher risk of developing new-onset ATA may be present in patients with BNP concentrations >40 pg/mL prior to transcatheter ASD closure.
