Predictors of hypophosphatemia and outcomes during continuous renal replacement therapy
Blood Purification Apr 26, 2020
Hendrix RJ, Hastings MC, Samarin M, et al. - Given up to 80% of patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) develop hypophosphatemia, which has been related to poor results, and if preemptive phosphate supplementation is warranted in select patients is a topic that remains inadequately inquired, so, researchers assessed predictors of hypophosphatemia as well as characterized treatment approaches in this single-center, retrospective cohort study with adult patients undergoing at least 12 h of CRRT. Overall 72 patients were analyzed. Findings revealed that patients requiring CRRT commonly developed hypophosphatemia, which was difficult to correct, and contributed to longer ICU stays. Experts also noted that in patients needing CRRT, a preemptive strategy to address hypophosphatemia including aggressive supplementation strategies to correct phosphorus is warranted.
