Predictors of hypertension in an urban HIV-infected population at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria
HIV/AIDS - Research and Palliative Care Aug 19, 2017
Okpa HO, et al. – This work was designed to assess the prevalence of Hypertension (HTN) and to investigate possible predictors among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected patients attending the HIV Special Treatment Clinic at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar. Observations revealed that in both HIV–infected and HIV–negative subjects, traditional risk factors such as older age, increased BMI, and obesity were associated with HTN. However HTN in HIV–positive individuals seemed associated with higher CD4 count level and cumulative HAART exposure. Multivariate logistic regression suggested that the predictors of HTN in both groups were absence of family history of HTN and older age in HIV–infected patients and HIV–negative subjects, respectively.
