Predictors of hospital cost after transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the United States: (From the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database)
The American Journal of Cardiology Jan 11, 2019
Ando T, et al. - In this study including 9,601 cases who had endovascular transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) from January 2011-September 2015 found in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, researchers investigated risk factors of high post-procedural hospitalization cost by using multivariable regression analysis. Estimated cost of hospitalization was calculated, and the lowest, medium, high, and highest quartiles of patients were defined. For the highest and lowest groups, the observed median in-hospital costs were $82,068 and $33,966, respectively. The highest cost group vs the lowest cost group had older and were more likely to be female. Higher hospitalization costs were observed in relation to higher comorbidity burden (attributed to heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, atrial fibrillation, anemia, and chronic dialysis) and major complications post TAVI. TAVI-related costs may be attenuated by preventing these complications.
