Predictors of acute kidney injury after infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in octogenarians

Journal of Vascular Surgery Feb 25, 2019

Dang T, et al. - Acute kidney injury (AKI) in octogenarians after open endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair (OAR) and endovascular AAA repair (EVAR) was evaluated via analyzing data from the Vascular Quality Initiative database on all patients who underwent elective infrarenal AAA repair between January 2003 and April 2017. Including a total of 27,993 patients (12% OAR and 88% EVAR), they identified 6708 (24%) who were octogenarians (OAR, 332; EVAR, 6376). Observations reveal that AAA repair may be followed by AKI, a serious complication, especially in octogenarians. It was identified to be associated with high failure to rescue rates. Risk factors for postoperative AKI in octogenarians comprised chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease stage III and chronic kidney disease stage IV-V, peripheral artery disease, preoperative β-blocker use, and aneurysm diameter.
