Prediction of acute kidney injury, sepsis and mortality in children with urinary CXCL10

Pediatric Research Nov 09, 2021

Huang H, Zhou H, Wang W, et al. - Researchers examined how urinary CXC motif chemokine 10 (uCXCL10) is associated with AKI, sepsis and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) mortality in critically ill children, and investigated if it could aid in predicting the aforementioned issues.

  • Researchers performed serial assessment of urinary CXCL10 levels in 342 critically ill children during the first week after PICU admission.

  • AKI developed in 52 (15.2%) children, sepsis was diagnosed in 132 (38.6%) children, and death during the PICU stay was recorded for 30 children (12.3%).

  • Findings suggest independent association of uCXCL10 levels with elevated risk for AKI, sepsis, septic AKI and PICU mortality.

  • Possibly, a higher uCXCL10 is predictive of septic AKI and PICU mortality in critically ill children.
