Predicting risk for opioid misuse in chronic pain with a single-item measure of catastrophic thinking

Lutz J, et al. - The experts undertook this study to investigate the utility of a single-item measure of pain-related catastrophizing in predicting the risk of opioid misuse. As per findings, a single question assessing pain catastrophizing was found to be beneficial for predicting the risk of opioid misuse. It also offered the primary care provider with information on a potentially modifiable risk factor that could be addressed within the context of a brief clinical visit.
