Predicting a beneficial response to motor control training in patients with low back pain: A longitudinal cohort study
European Spine Journal Nov 06, 2019
Hides JA, Murphy M, Jang E, et al. - On the basis of self-reported variation in pain levels and symptoms, the response of 775 individuals with low back pain (LBP) to motor control training (MCT) was classified as "improved" or "not improved" in order to retrospectively review records from a large cohort of individuals who received MCT treatment, recognize potentially significant predictors of response to MCT and examine the predictors on an independent (split) sample derived from the original cohort of persons, using one group to recognize the predictors and the other to test them. In persons with no evidence of scoliosis, LBP without correlated groin pain, LBP which was chronic recurrent in nature and poor outcomes on muscle testing of the multifidus muscle, a positive response was obtained. Testing on an independent sample validated that persons could be categorized into advantage groups. Hence, this study gives the first initiative towards helping clinicians to choose individuals most inclined to respond to MCT.
