Polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and the risk of keratinocyte cancer: A Mendelian randomisation analysis

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jun 09, 2021

Seviiri M, Law MH, Ong JS, et al. - Whether genetically predicted polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations are related to basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) risks, was investigated via this two sample Mendelian Randomisation study. Researchers used PUFA level GWASs from the CHARGE consortium (n > 8,000), as well as the meta-analysis GWASs from UKB, 23andMe and Qskin for BCC (n = 651,138) and SCC (n = 635,331) risk. According to findings, a decreased BCC risk was observed in relation to higher genetically predicted levels of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, but a higher BCC risk was evident in relation to arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. This implies that BCC aetiology could be impacted by PUFA related diet and supplementation.
