Pleomorphic adenoma of the head and neck in children: Presentation and management

The Laryngoscope Oct 31, 2019

Dombrowski ND, Wolter NE, Irace AL, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, researchers analyzed the presentation, evaluation, and management of pediatric pleomorphic adenoma of the head and neck. Between 1998 and 2017, they included patients under 20 years of age treated for pleomorphic adenoma of the head and neck. Forty-one individuals have been diagnosed with pleomorphic adenoma. Findings revealed that major salivary gland lesions were most common (78.0%); 78.1% arising in the parotid and 21.9% in the submandibular glands. Minor salivary gland lesions have been extracted from the palate, buccal mucosa, parapharyngeal space, and upper lip. In children, evaluation of pleomorphic adenoma should include preoperative imaging. The goal of surgery should be full excision with negative margins. The rate of recurrence is low, but it is recommended to continue monitoring. Transient facial paresis, Frey syndrome, and bacterial pharyngitis caused postoperative complications.
