Platelet-rich plasma vs. hyaluronic acid for hip osteoarthritis: Minimum 12-month follow-up results
Arthroscopy Jan 29, 2021
Kraeutler MJ, Miller SL, Houck DA, et al. - In this study, the effectiveness of intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) was compared with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in patients with early hip osteoarthritis (OA). Researchers randomized patients presenting to a hip preservation surgeon with signs of early hip OA to treatment with HA or PRP. They included 28 patients (57.1% male) with 30 hips (hips, HA=13; PRP=17). In comparison with treatment with HA, intra-articular hip injections of PRP in patients with early hip OA result in symptomatic improvement and delay the need for a THA or hip resurfacing procedure. Future research is required to ascertain the effectiveness of HA injections within this population.
