Planned oocyte cryopreservation (planned OC): Systematic review and meta‐analysis of cost‐efficiency and patients’ perspective
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Apr 14, 2021
Weizman NF, Baram S, Montbriand J, et al. - Researchers investigated the cost‐efficiency and utilization of planned oocyte cryopreservation (Planned OC). In addition, they examined patients’ perspectives on the process. A systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Database and PsychINFO yielded 12,545 records; 43 of these were included in this study. Findings suggest planned OC to be cost‐efficient at 35, assuming 60% utilization; and at 37 assuming utilizing donor sperm when necessary. At present, utilization of banked‐oocytes is up to 15% within 22–58 months. As per most patients, planned OC is ideal before age 35 and most of them are not fully aware of what the process entails and tend to overestimate the success rates. Findings overall support the adequacy of planned OC for preserving fertility. However, there are knowledge gaps that result in under‐utilization leading to decreased cost‐efficiency.
