Physical activity intensity and cardiovascular disease prevention: From the SUN study

The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 13, 2018

Hidalgo-Santamaria M, et al. - Researchers explored the link between the intensity of physical activity and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), irrespective of energy expenditure (EE), by using data from a large Spanish cohort (Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra) comprised of university graduates who were recruited from March 1999 to October 2015. Participants were 18,737 adults without CVD (mean age was 38 years, and 61% were women), with a median follow-up of 10.3 years. They estimated the average intensity of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and classified respondents into three groups: inactive, <6 average METs, and ≥6 average METs. According to findings, the adjusted hazard ratio for CVD in the lower intensity group was 0.76 and 0.31 for the higher intensity group vs inactive, with a linear trend (P=0.03). Results suggested a lower risk of CVD among those participants who engaged in higher intensity LTPA given the same level of EE.
