Phenotypes of atopic dermatitis and the risk for subsequent asthma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Aug 14, 2021

Li H, Dai T, Liu C, et al. - According to this systematic review and meta-analysis, patients with severe or persistent atopic dermatitis (AD) were more likely to acquire asthma. Such data help to clarify the atopic march and identify asthma prevention target populations.

  • Thirty-nine articles with 458,810 individuals were evaluated.

  • In people with atopic dermatitis, the relative risk of asthma was 2.16.

  • Persistent AD had a higher risk than transient AD, and severe AD had a higher risk than mild or moderate AD.

  • Early-onset AD had a little higher risk of asthma than late-onset AD, and boys had a slightly higher risk than girls.
