Pesticides and chemicals as potential risk factors of aplastic anemia: A case- control study among a Pakistani population

Clinical Epidemiology Jun 23, 2021

Asif Syed M, Rahman AAU, Siddiqui MI, et al. - Researchers performed this hospital-based case–control study (191 cases, 696 controls) to determine if aplastic anemia is associated with family history of this disease and with exposure to pesticides and chemicals. Patients diagnosed with aplastic anemia, confirmed with bone marrow biopsy, comprised cases. Those neither suffering from aplastic anemia nor having other hematological chronic diseases, were set as controls. In this study, 191 confirmed aplastic anemia cases were analyzed, with mean age 29 years (range: 4– 69). Findings showed that aplastic anemia was significantly associated with family history of aplastic anemia, exposure to pesticide and insecticide exposure. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to establish this association.
