Peripartum echocardiographic changes in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Jul 30, 2021
Giorgione V, O'Driscoll J, Coutinho CM, et al. - This prospective longitudinal study was conducted to compare echocardiographic findings immediately prior to as well as following childbirth in females with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). This study involved 30 women with a diagnosis of HDP. Participants were asked to undergo two consecutive transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) assessments: the first prepartum and the second in the early postpartum period. Findings revealed no significant impact of maternal hemodynamic changes linked with birth on peripartum TTE indices in women with HDP. In HDP, suboptimal maternal echocardiographic findings are possibly attributable to chronic pregnancy cardiovascular (CV) load alterations or pre-existing maternal CV impairment. There may exist a link between severity and persistence of myocardial dysfunction into the postpartum period and long-term maternal CV disease legacy of HDP.
