Perineural invasion predicts for distant metastasis in locally advanced rectal cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation and surgery
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Dec 14, 2017
Chablani P, et al. - In this study, experts sought to investigate the association of perineural invasion (PNI) with outcomes to determine whether PNI could be used to risk-stratify patients. PNI found at the time of surgery was significantly correlated with worse distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) and disease-free survival (DFS) for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). The data supported testing the role of adjuvant chemotherapy among patients with PNI and perhaps other high-risk features.
