Performance and return to sport after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement in professional athletes differs between sports
Arthroscopy Apr 16, 2019
Jack RA, et al. - In this study, the authors estimated the followings: (1) return-to-sport rates for National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, and National Hockey League (NHL) athletes following hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, (2) postoperative return-to-sport rate differences between sports, (3) differences in postoperative career length and games per season, (4) differences in preoperative and postoperative performance, and (5) postoperative performance comparison with matched control players. A high RTS rate for professional athletes following surgery for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome was noted. With no difference between sports, they found significantly shorter careers of NHL athletes, and played significantly fewer games per season when compared with matched control players. The significantly worse postoperative performance was reported in NHL athletes when compared with preoperative performance.
