Pediatric lichen planus: A systematic review of 985 published cases

International Journal of Dermatology Aug 13, 2021

Merhy R, Sarkis AS, Assaf J, et al. - Lichen planus (LP) had a wide polymorphous clinical presentation in children, with the majority of reported cases coming from India. In children, the linear variant was more common, and the oral mucosa was less affected. LPP, a rare subtype in children, recurred more frequently after treatment with systemic corticosteroids.

  • A total of 164 articles were included, representing 985 patients.

  • The most common clinical signs were flat-topped papules (51%), with a linear variant present in 9%.

  • Oral involvement was present in 22% of the cases.

  • Topical corticosteroids were the most commonly used treatment, followed by systemic corticosteroids.

  • The average treatment time was 124.4 days.

  • LPP patients had a shorter disease duration before diagnosis and were more likely to fail earlier treatments.

  • This subgroup received more systemic corticosteroids and saw higher recurrence after treatment.
