Patterns and prognostic markers for treatment response in generalized epilepsies
Neurology® Nov 05, 2020
Gesche J, Hjalgrim H, Rubboli G, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to determine the pattern of treatment response in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) and to determine whether clinical and neurophysiological parameters routinely assessed allow prediction of response to lamotrigine, levetiracetam, or valproic acid. Demographic data, imaging, EEG data, current and previous antiepileptic care, treatment outcome, and side effects from patient medical history and patient interviews were examined in 328 adult patients with IGE. Despite a high rate of seizure control, due to an inverse relationship of efficacy and side effects of the 3 most widely used medications, the likelihood of achieving seizure control and acceptable side effects at the first attempt was low. Clinical parameters regularly measured were not predictive for response to particular drugs.
