Pathologic grading of mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the salivary gland and its effect on clinicopathologic follow-up: an institutional experience

Human Pathology Apr 07, 2020

Shafique K, et al. - Researchers applied a 3-tier grading system to explore clinicopathologic features of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and cytologic diagnoses were retrospectively categorized as per the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC). This study determined a sum of 69 cases of MEC, and most were seen in the parotid gland. Compared with intermediate- and low-grade MEC, aggressive clinical behavior was seen in high-grade MEC. The study found MAML2 rearrangements in 78% of cases by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. The finding suggest that clustering intermediate- with low-grade cases did not significantly effect the clinical behavior. The data reveal that both high-grade and oncocytic MEC can be MAML2 FISH negative.
