Parathyroidectomy is associated with slow progression of vascular calcification in maintenance hemodialysis patients: A propensity score-matched case–control study

Nephrology Oct 21, 2021

Saeseow S, Vantanasiri K, Suvikapakornkul R, et al. - Among maintenance hemodialysis patients, progression of vascular calcification was slow in those who underwent parathyroidectomy.

  • In this matched case–control study, patients who had parathyroidectomy were matched 1:1 to non-parathyroidectomized (non-PTX) hemodialysis patients, resulting in 120 patients in each arm.

  • In the PTX and non-PTX groups, aortic arch calcification (AoAC) progression was seen in 33% and 47%, respectively.

  • Parathyroidectomy was identified as an independent protective factor and elevated serum calcium as a potentiating factor for progression of AoAC.

  • Parathyroidectomy was associated with better survival, and a correlation was found between more rapid progression of AoAC and worse survival.
