Parameters affecting anterior capsulotomy tear strength and distension

Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Dec 05, 2018

Daya SM, et al. - In this two separate randomized pairwise cadaver eye preclinical studies, researchers analyzed the impacts of anterior capsulotomy diameter and discontinuity on tear threshold load and distension for the technique of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC). They performed capsulotomies in 40 cadaver eyes of 20 donors using CCC. When exposed to an external load and distension, anterior capsulotomies act as nonlinear elastic (elastomeric) systems. As compared to discontinuous capsulotomies, continuous circular capsulotomies were more resistant to anterior tears. A point of irregularity or a defect in a capsulotomy rim is highly likely to be the tear initiation point. In addition, larger diameter capsulotomies were more resistant to anterior tears than smaller capsulotomies.
