Egi M, et al. - In adult patients requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) for >48 h, researchers analyzed fraction of inspired oxygen (F_IO₂), partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO₂) and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO₂) from commencement of MV until the 7th day of MV in the intensive care unit, to ultimately observe arterial oxygen in relation to F_IO₂ during MV. They noted that the occurrence of hyperoxemia was common as PaO₂ was ≥100 mm Hg during 47.2% of the study period and hyperoxemia was not corrected as F_IO₂ was less likely decreased when F_IO₂ was <0.5.
