Oxidative stress-related biomarkers in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid associated with chronic periodontitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Clinical Periodontology May 28, 2019
Chen M, et al. - Researchers conducted this meta-analysis in order to investigate how local oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers are related to chronic periodontitis (CP). They identified a total of 2,972 articles; Of these, they included 32 articles fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The saliva of CP patients showed a significant decrease of total antioxidant capacity and a significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide, total oxidant status, and 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine levels. Furthermore, the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of CP group vs the PH group showed an elevation of MDA level. These findings suggest a direct link between CP and OS-related biomarkers’ levels in the local site, symbolizing the important role of OS in the onset and development of CP.
