Overview and quality assurance for the oral health component of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2011–2014
BMC Oral Health Jun 03, 2019
Dye BA, et al. - During the 2011–2014 NHANES, modifications in the oral health component were done, beginning in 2011 the oral health (OH) examination was administered by a dentist, unlike 2005–2010, where the OH examination was administered by a registered health technologist or dental hygienist. In 2011, the reintroduction of a comprehensive dental caries assessment after a 6-year absence from NHANES was done. Researchers sought to report oral health content information and results of dental examiner reliability statistics for key intraoral assessments conducted by dentists during 2011–2014 in this work. An oral health examination was done in 17,463 persons age 1 and older representing the US civilian, non-institutionalized population during the 2011–2014 NHANES. A repeat examination conducted by the survey reference examiner on 387 individuals from this group. For tooth count and dentition, results indicated a high level of data quality and substantial examiner reliability. For periodontal disease, at least moderate reliability across various assessments was noted. Comparable concordance was noted between the examiners and the reference examiner when the 2011–2014 examiner performance was compared to findings from 2003 to 2004.
