Outpatient follow-up does not prevent emergency department utilization by trauma patients

Journal of Surgical Research Oct 09, 2017

Dalton MK, et al. - The proposition contemplated herein, was that outpatient follow-up exerted a protective effect against emergency department (ED) utilization and readmissions. The findings did not disclose any decrease in the ED utilization or hospital readmissions due to the outpatient follow-up in the trauma clinic. The interventions pointed at improving the access to a conventional outpatient clinic would not influence the ED utilization rates. In order to identify the best system for providing clinically appropriate and cost-effective outpatient follow-up for trauma patients, additional research was warranted.
