Outcomes with intraoperative radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer

The Breast Journal Oct 04, 2019

Obi E, Tom MC, Manyam BV, et al. - In this work, the initial outcomes and acute toxicities with intraoperative radiation for early-stage breast cancer were reported from a single institution. Researchers analyzed 201 patients (median age: 71 years old) with DCIS or Stage I-II breast cancer. These patients underwent lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (nodal sampling excluded in some cases) and had undergone intraoperative radiation therapy as at the time of surgery, 20 Gy in 1 fraction with 50 kV x-ray. During a median follow-up of 23 months (range: 0-73 months), they observed low rates of recurrence and reproducibility in a cohort of low-risk patients in correlation with intraoperative radiation therapy in a multi-disciplinary setting. The crude rate of local recurrence of 2.0% (n = 4) and distant metastasis rate of 0.5% (n = 1) were reported. they observed arm lymphedema rate of 0.5% (n = 1) and chronic telangiectasia rate of 1.1% (n = 2).
