Outcomes of enucleation and porous polyethylene orbital implant insertion in patients with paediatric retinoblastoma: A long-term follow-up study

British Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 11, 2020

Yang MK, Lee MJ, Kim N, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for reporting the long-term outcomes of enucleation and insertion of porous polyethylene (PP) orbital implant according to the evolving surgical techniques and implant in patients with paediatric retinoblastoma. From December 1998 to December 2014, patients with paediatric retinoblastoma who underwent enucleation and PP implant insertion were retrospectively reviewed. The sample consisted of 196 patients (198 eyes). Upper eyelid ptosis was the most common eyelid malposition. After PP implant insertion and anterior closure of the posterior Tenon’s, the long-term postenucleation implant exposure was unusual, even with a 20 mm-diameter implant. For the long-term prevention of eyelid malposition, a larger implant might be helpful.
