Outcomes following the delayed management of open tibial fractures
Injury Jun 25, 2021
Higgin R, Dean M, Qureshi A, et al. - This study was undertaken to explore outcomes where this timeline was unachievable for most cases due to a split-site orthoplastic service. Researchers examined 116 consecutive Gustilo-Anderson grade IIIB & IIIC open tibial fractures presented to our major trauma centre (MTC) between September 2012 and April 2018. As per the findings, major trauma individuals are especially vulnerable to poor outcomes resulting from the delay in definitive management of open fractures. A co-located orthoplastic service was needed in MTC's to achieve national standards and better outcomes. The outcomes suggested that current guidelines do not advise for the management of patients where a delay in definitive surgery is anticipated.
