Outcomes after prehospital traumatic cardiac arrest in the Netherlands: A retrospective cohort study
Injury Mar 08, 2021
Houwen T, Popal Z, de Bruijn MAN, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients ≥ 18 years who suffered from traumatic cardiac arrest and who were subsequently treated on-scene by the Dutch Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) with the aim to determine the rate of survival to discharge in these patients. They included 915 patients with confirmed TCA. Of these, 261 patients (28.5%) had achievement of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) on-scene. Survival to hospital discharge was recorded for 36 (3.9%) patients; of these, 17 (47.2%) had a good neurological outcome. Findings suggest the possibility of neurologic intact survival after prehospital traumatic cardiac arrest. Higher survival rates were recorded after TCA for younger patients and patients with a shockable ECG rhythm.
