Outcome after surgical treatment of fragility ankle fractures in a certified orthogeriatric trauma center
Injury Jul 11, 2018
Schray D, et al. - The outcome after surgically treated ankle fractures at a certified orthogeriatric trauma center were investigated. The elderly who underwent surgical treatment for ankle fractures in a certified geriatric fracture center seem to have limited negative effect on their quality of life. The otherwise often demonstrated high mortality rates were not observed. However, nearly half of the patients still demonstrated perioperative complications, highlighting the necessity for optimal perioperative care at an orthogeriatric trauma center. Researchers identified a reasonable number of patients with wound healing issues in this study, supporting the idea of a staged protocol using external fixation with secondary ORIF.
