Orthopaedic metallic artefact reduction algorithm facilitates CT evaluation of the urinary tract after hip prosthesis
Clinical Radiology Oct 11, 2019
Kaposi PN, Youn T, Tóth A, et al. - Researchers assessed the efficacy of metallic artefact reduction for orthopaedic implants (O-MAR) for improving the visualisation of bladder and ureteric pathologies next to a hip prosthesis in this study with retrospectively enrolled 34 patients who had a pelvic computed tomography (CT) for non-prosthesis-associated causes. They reconstructed portal venous phase scans both with standard iterative reconstruction (ITR) and with O-MAR. On ITR images, a significantly lower average (μ) density of the 41 prosthesis side ureters was evident, compared with O-MAR images. Overall, a significantly improved visibility of the urinary tract adjacent to metallic hip implants was provided by O-MAR reconstruction of CT images. Therefore, O-MAR was viewed as crucial for identifying ureteric and bladder pathologies in patients with a hip prosthesis.
